LONDON, June 25 (Reuters) - Julian Assange's wife Stella said on Tuesday she was elated and it was a victory for journalism after the WikiLeaks founder was granted permission to return to Australia.

Assange, 50, has been living in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over allegations of sexual assault, which he denies. In April, he was arrested by British police after Ecuador withdrew his asylum.

On Tuesday, a British judge ruled that Assange could be extradited to the United States to face charges of conspiring to hack into a Pentagon computer system. However, the judge also said that Assange could appeal the decision.

Speaking to Reuters after the hearing, Stella Assange said she was "elated" by the decision.

"This is a victory for Julian and for journalism," she said. "It's a victory for the rule of law and for the freedom of the press."

Assange is expected to return to Australia within the next few weeks.
